Surfers hit the water for a chance at royalty

Quiksilver's annual King of the Peak is coming to Sebastian Inlet

By: Ryan Seeloff

The annual event that is Quiksilver's King of the Peak will invade the waters of Sebastian Inlet's north jetty November 6-7 to see who will be crowned for 2010.

The past 10 winners include; 2009- Eddie Guilbeau- Melbourne Beach, 2008- Cody Thompson- Jacksonville, 2007- Eric Taylor- Vero Beach, 2006- Jeremy Johnston- New Smyrna Beach, 2005- Kyle Garson- Melbourne Beach, 2004- Justin Jones- Melbourne Beach, 2003- Brian Hewitson- Indialantic, 2002- CJ Hobgood- Satellite Beach, 2001- Kelly Slater- Cocoa Beach and 2000- David Speir- Melbourne.

Waves are expected to be contestable, but by no means epic. That just means the action will be intense as each surfer works every wave to milk the most points out of it.

In traditional surf contests surfers will be judged on multiple waves, but not during King of the Peak. During this contest when a surfer feels that they scored a really good wave they will raise their hands and "claim" it. The surfer then must exit the water and pray for the best for the remainder of the heat. The winner of each heat gets a "skin" and the winner of the contest is the surfer with the most skins.

Look for photos from both days right here on Destination Brevard and updates during the contest each day (as long as the wireless connection is decent).

See you at King of the Peak.
