*Coverage of West Shore Junior/Senior High's post season from Lyn Dowling*
Sometimes, smarts and steadiness beats size and strength. If they didn’t, West Shore Junior/Senior High School’s boys soccer team would not be headed to the FHSAA Class 2A state championship next Friday night at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
The Wildcats defeated Bolles 1-0 in Jacksonville Friday in the state semifinal, a match viewed by 130 fans from the soccer-crazed school in Melbourne, who traveled by bus to the private school in North Florida, which has one of the better athletic programs in the state.
The match was scoreless through the first and most of the second halves, the Wildcats faced by a team that coach Scott Armstrong called “bigger and much stronger than we were.” But after Bolles made some changes to its defensive alignment, Armstrong shifted the Wildcats’ offensive plans to attacks on the left.
In the 59th minute, the changes paid off and Kevin Kurtz danced through the home team’s midfield and defenders, took on his last man one-on-one, cut inside and fired home from 18 yards.
“For me, as a coach, (the match) was tactically perfect,” Armstrong said.
He believes West Shore is well-placed to defeat its opponent in the final, which will be either American Heritage of Delray or Berkeley Prep.
“We work harder than any other team and I am so proud of the boys,” he said. “This was a huge win for us because Bolles is a goliath program. This was massive.”
