Scholes school coming to Orlando, Titusville SC to host keeper clinic

He may not be Steven Gerrard, but Paul Scholes is a pretty decent midfielder (play for Manchester United though he does) and he’s going to be in Central Florida in June, which should afford local youth players the chance to learn a bit.
The ginger-haired England player will operate his Paul Scholes Academy from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 14 through 17 and 21 through 24 at Austin Tindall Regional Park in Orlando, with two- and four-day packages available each week. Costs are $449 per full week or $349 per Monday/Tuesday or Wednesday/Thursday (two-day) session.
Darlington and former Burnley manager Simon Davey; Glen Buckley, state director of coaching for New York West Youth Soccer Association; and Paul Halford, state director of coaching for Pennsylvania West YSA, will assist.
All joking aside, Scholes is a remarkable, world-class player and a great favorite of people who really know the game, and the other former midfield man, Davey, has done some amazing things at his clubs (ask Rafa Benitez about that F.A. Cup fiasco three years ago). It is, as its publicity says, the opportunity of a lifetime.

Late notice, but . . . Florida Youth Soccer Association Director of Goalkeeping Richard Chisolm will offer a free goalkeeping clinic for 10- through 18-year-olds from 3 to 4 p.m. (Under-10s through U-12s) and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. (U-13s through U-18s) Sunday, April 18 at Chain of Lakes Park in Titusville.
“(Chisolm) works closely with former U.S. women's Olympic and World Cup winning coach Tony DiCiccio and brings a wealth of experience with him,” said Titusville Soccer Club Director of Coaching Tristan Williams.
Players must bring pumped-up balls with their names written on them and be dressed and ready to play. Coaches and interested parents are more than welcome to attend and Chisolm will have a question-and-answer session at the park.

Let’s hear it . . . for Cody Laurendi, the former BYSL and Eau Gallie High School goalkeeping standout, who recently signed a contract to play for the Puerto Rico Islanders of the United Soccer League . . . and for former Rockledge Soccer club standout Courtney Calhoun, who was named to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division I all-tournament team. She is a freshman at Palm Beach Atlantic University.
D.C. Cup coming . . . If association football weren’t about the fun, it would be called a job instead of a game, and the Brevard Youth Soccer league’s major recreational tournament, the District Commissioner’s Cup tournament is all about fun. It will take place May 15 and 16 at Mitchell Ellington Park in Merritt Island.
This is one of the truly entertaining, truly heartwarming events on the athletic calendar and we can’t endorse it strongly enough, or recommend it more highly to recreational and academy teams around the county.

Make plans early . . . As hard-core supporters know, the United States Men’s National Team will open World Cup play against England at 2:30 p.m. June 12. Well, the folks from Titusville Soccer Club want to make an afternoon of it, and so will watch the match at the Shamrock & Thistle Pub, 2035 Cheney Highway. See you there, Lions and Sam’s Army.
