World View: Bad Bleus, mad Maradona, gritty Greece
World Cup commentary and questions, Part IV

By: Lyn Dowling
-- Disjointed, dispirited, disastrous: France’s performance (or lack thereof) against Mexico. Who would have thought Les Bleus could be that mauvais?
-- Speaking of France, why in the world would the manager of a side so utterly lacking in cohesiveness and command, leave Thierry Henry, master of those arts, on the bench? It is indeed time for Raymond Domenech to go.
-- When was the last time so many own goals were scored in a World Cup tournament? When was the last time goalkeeping errors were this egregious?
-- There is no truth to the rumor that Universal is about to introduce a new theme park called “The Wizarding World of Lionel Messi.”
-- Speaking of which, Argentina wins a World Cup match beautifully, and the manager uses the post-match presser to draw attention to his own sideshow, featuring his petty feuds with Pele and Michel Platini. Attention, Fidel Castro: your amigo Maradona needs a flight to Havana, pronto.
-- You’ve got to love the way Greece fought back for the victory against Nigeria, especially considering all that’s happened in Greece the last few months.
-- Mexico captain Rafa Marquez looks like Rob Lowe, doesn’t he?
-- Fernando Torres looks like an adult with his new haircut, doesn’t he? Then again, as long as he keeps looking like a Liverpool player, the ‘do can be forgiven.
-- Stupidest commercial this World Cup: the two twits trying to work in as many soccer terms while contending for a six-pack of beer at a convenience store.
-- If FIFA were to give a Zinedane Zidane Award for stupid and counterproductive behavior, Nigeria’s Sani Kaita would lead balloting this year after that kick at Vassilis Torosidis of Greece. Would you want to be him when the team gets back to Lagos. Torosidis is quite the actor, though.
-- Jurgen Klinsmann is as classy a commentator as he was a player and is a coach.
Friday could be one of the biggest days of the tournament, with Germany-Serbia, England-Algeria and USA-Slovenia. See you then!
