1/31- Paving Work Inside Wickham Park to Begin February 1
Beginning Wednesday, February 1, road crews will be repaving portions of the loop road inside of Wickham Park, 2500 Parkway Drive, in Melbourne. During the construction period, vehicles are asked to enter the park via the western most entrance off of Parkway Drive or through the Senior Center entrance on North Wickham Road. The paving project will encompass the western loop of the interior roadway from the main entrance to the campground and patrons are asked to avoid this area during the construction period. Construction is expected to take approximately 2 to 3 weeks.

1/31- Forever Hearts 5K and Fun Walk
Brevard County Parks and Recreation’s Run Brevard ReCreate Your Life 5K Race Series will continue in February with the Forever Hearts 5K and Fun Walk at Max K. Rodes Park. The park is located at 3410 Flanagan Avenue in West Melbourne. This is the third race of the series. There will be three additional races held in various Brevard County Parks through June 2012.
The Forever Hearts 5K and Fun Walk starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday, February 18. The pre-registration fee (before February 11) is $14 per runner and $11 per walker. Day of race registration is $18 per runner and $12 per walker. All children must be accompanied by an adult. T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 100 entrants. Plaques are awarded to the Male and Female 1st place runners overall, masters, and age groups 0-9, then standard 5 year increments up to 80 years old. Medals are awarded to all 2nd place and 3rd place runners in each age group. Door prizes will also be awarded.

1/31- Swim Lessons at Palm Bay Aquatic Center
The Palm Bay Aquatic Center will begin taking registrations for swim lessons on Saturday, February 18 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The center is located at 420 Community College Parkway, just south of the Brevard Community College Campus. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from February 28 through March 22. Parent/tot and preschool classes begin at 10:30 a.m. Preschool classes begin at 5:15 p.m. Classes for levels 1,2, and 3 begin at 5:50 p.m. The cost is $35 for parent/tot and preschool and $45 for levels 1 through 3.

1/27- Vendors Sought for Mom-to-Mom Toy and Clothing Garage Sale in Viera
Brevard County Parks and Recreation is now accepting applications for vendors for the Mom-to-Mom Toy and Clothing Garage Sale to be held Saturday, March 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Viera Regional Community Center.
A garage sale specializing in children's clothing and toys, the event is designed for parents to be able to shop while their children ages 2 through 12 are involved in play date sessions on-site. There is no cost to browse; play date sessions are $2 per child per hour. Pre-registration is required, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.
Interested vendors may obtain applications at the Viera Regional Community Center. Six-foot by six-foot vendor spaces are $15.90 and include a five-foot table. All spaces are indoors. Payment for table space must be made by Wednesday, February 29.

1/27- Crafters Sought for Spring Festival of Crafts at Fox Lake Park
Registration for tables and spaces at the Seventh Annual Spring Festival of Crafts at Fox Lake Park in Titusville, to be held April 14, will begin on February 6, at the North Area Parks Operations office.
Spaces under the pavilion are $30 each plus Florida state sales tax, and spaces in the outside area are $20 plus Florida state sales tax. They are limited to two per crafter, and all items must be handmade or homemade.
Application forms will be available starting February 6 at 475 North Williams Avenue in Titusville, by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope, at www.brevardparks.com, or by email to email@example.com. The registration deadline is 4 p.m. on April 6.

1/27- Lifeguard & CPR Certification Challenge Classes to be held at Palm Bay Aquatic Center
The Palm Bay Aquatic Center will offer an American Red Cross CPR for Lifeguards Challenge course on Tuesday, February 7, and an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Challenge on Wednesday, March 7.
The CPR challenge course is for individuals with current lifeguard training certification who need to renew their CPR certification. Class will run from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Participants can watch videos and review from 4:30 to 6 p.m., and testing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost for this course is $50 and must be paid by February 2. Class size is limited. Interested candidates must have prior knowledge of professional rescuer CPR skills, and will be asked to demonstrate proficiency in CPR and AED skills, and pass a written test. Participants are asked to bring their own pocket masks.
The lifeguard challenge course is for individuals with current lifeguard training certification which needs to be renewed. Class will run from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Practice and review will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., and testing will begin at 5:30 p.m. The cost for this course is $50 and must be paid by February 28. Class size is limited. Interested candidates must bring a copy of current certification in lifeguarding and CPR/FPR, and will be asked to demonstrate proficiency in lifeguarding, first aid, CPR and AED skills, and pass a written test. Participants are asked to bring their own pocket mask.

1/26- Student Nature Photo Contest at Sykes Creek Adventures
Brevard County Parks & Recreation and the Friends of Ulumay are sponsoring a Student Nature Photo Contest and Silent Auction. The contest and silent auction will be held in conjunction with Sykes Creek Adventures on February 18 at Kiwanis Island Park, located at 951 Kiwanis Island Park Road, in Merritt Island.
The contest is open to all students up to age 18 and will be divided into the following age categories: 9 and under, 10-13 and 14-18. The photos are entered under the following categories: Wildlife, Environmental Scenic and Plants. Entries must be submitted by 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15 at Rotary Park Nature Center in Merritt Island.

1/26- Art in the Park to be held at Erna Nixon Park
Brevard County Parks and Recreation and the Friends of Erna Nixon Park will host an Art in the Park event at Erna Nixon Park on Saturday, February 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Art in the Park will provide an opportunity to stroll through one of Brevard County’s hidden gems and view locally made art focused on the beauty of nature. Participating artists and photographers will be in attendance to display, sell and talk to the public about their nature-themed art. A silent auction will feature pieces donated by artists and photographers.
From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. there will be an art table where children can design their own piece of art using recycled materials. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Admission to the event is $1 and all proceeds benefit the Friends of Erna Nixon Park. Parking will be available at the Melbourne Square Mall parking lot at pole #4, on the west side of JC Penney. A free shuttle bus will be available to transport visitors to and from the park.

1/26- Cuyler Community Center to host Free "Let's Get Movin'" Event
Cuyler Community Center will host a free "Let’s Get Movin’" event for American Heart Month on Saturday, February 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will include jump-roping, soul line dancing, a kids' fun run, zumba and more. Participants are encouraged to wear red. The benefits of physical exercise are many, and there is no age limit.

1/26- Native Edible Plants to be topic at Lunch with Nature
Native Edible Plants in Your Yard will be the topic, with Kari Ruder of Naturewise Nursery as the guest speaker, at the monthly Lunch with Nature program at the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary on Tuesday, February 21 at noon.
Lunch with Nature is held the third Tuesday of each month with speakers that cover topics of interest for residents living along the east coast, such as conservation, water management, historical sites, plants, sea turtles and other areas of interest. There is no cost to attend, and participants provide their own lunch.

1/26- Day Camp Offered on February 20 at Viera Regional Park Community Center
Brevard County Parks and Recreation is hosting a day camp on Monday, February 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Viera Regional Community Center, located at 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way in Viera.
Camp is for children ages kindergarten through sixth grade and the fee is $20 per child. Before care is also available from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and after care is available from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The cost for before/after care is $7 each or $12 for both. Registration and payment must be made by 9 p.m. on Thursday, February 16. Space is limited.
February 20 will be a student holiday for Brevard Public Schools.

1/26- Sykes Creek Adventures Eco-Festival to be held February 18
Brevard County Parks and Recreation and Friends of Ulumay will host Sykes Creek Adventures on Saturday, February 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kiwanis Island Park, 951 Kiwanis Island Park Road, Merritt Island.
Sykes Creek Adventures is a family eco-festival featuring opportunities to explore and enjoy the natural resources of Brevard County. Attendees will be able to meet people and organizations involved with environmental aspects of the county, delve into the history and archaeology of the Indian River Lagoon, attend workshops, make oyster mats and try geocaching. There will also be guided river boat tours on Sykes Creek for an additional fee. There will be baskets raffled with proceeds benefiting the Hook Kids on Fishing Program.
The cost to attend is $1 per person; children 2 years and under will be admitted free. A wristband for the kid’s area is $2 which includes unlimited use of inflatable games. There will be food & beverages for sale.
In conjunction with Sykes Creek Adventures, the Anglers for Conservation will host a free Hook Kids on Fishing program for kids ages 6 to 16 with their parents starting at 9 a.m. There will be clinics on casting, conservation, habitat restoration, fishing safety, knot tying, and catch and release tactics. The program is limited to the first 50 registrants.
Enter the Sykes Creek Adventures Paddling Challenge, a seven-mile course in the relatively protected waters of Sykes Creek. All types of paddling crafts are invited. The challenge goes from Kiwanis Island Park up to the Barge Canal and back. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and paddling starts at 9 a.m. The cost to enter is $25 in advance or $30 at the event. 12/22- Interpretive Canoe Trips Offered in Cocoa Beach's Thousand Islands
The Central Area of Brevard County Parks and Recreation will conduct interpretive canoe trips in the Thousand Islands on Friday, January 27 and Friday, February 24, meeting at 9:30 a.m. at Ramp Road Park, 599 Ramp Road, Cocoa Beach.
This two-hour trip is a nice easy paddle that affords participants the opportunity to learn more about the wildlife and environment that surrounds Cocoa Beach. Canoers should wear shoes that can get wet and bring bottled water. The cost is $10 per person and pre-registration is required.
